Notes in the Margins: How Mascara Came to Be

The first mascara appeared in the not-so-distant year of 1913.

It was created by chemist Terry L. Williams for his sister Mabel. The mascara was a mixture of petroleum jelly and charcoal powder. After Williams began selling the mascara, he decided to name his then-small company by combining two words: Mabel (Mabel) and Vaseline (Vaseline). In the future, this company transformed into the huge cosmetic giant “Mabeline,” which is known worldwide.

The packaging of the mascara, which we know today and that everyone enjoys using, appeared almost 40 years after the invention of the product, thanks to Helena Rubinstein.
