How to Get Rid of Dark Spots After Shaving Legs
Have you ever heard of “strawberry legs”? Unfortunately, it’s not related to delicious fruits. This term refers to the dark spots that sometimes appear after shaving your legs. But don’t worry — with a few simple tips, they can be quickly eliminated.
You’ve just shaved your legs, you’re running your hands over them, and you think, “They can’t be smoother!” But what’s this? Although the skin feels smooth, it doesn’t look perfect. Where there used to be stubble, now there are tiny dark dots. What’s happening?
In the USA, this annoying problem has long been dubbed “Strawberry Legs,” which translates to “клубничные ножки” in Russian. Why is that? These dark spots resemble seeds on the surface of a strawberry. Sounds cute, right? But while the spots on berries don’t bother us, on legs, they are annoying. So, we’ll explain why they appear and how to get rid of them.
What are these dark spots on my legs?
When men shave, a shadow from their beard often remains on the skin. A similar effect is observed with “strawberry legs” after shaving. “When shaving, hair is removed only on the surface, so small remnants remain under the skin, which can show through depending on the color and density of the hair. If you don’t shave, you don’t see strawberry legs, as the hair simply becomes visible on the surface over time,” explains Munich dermatologist Dr. Timm Goluke.
By the way, this is why some women notice the effect only on their shins, as they only shave that area. Hair above the knees is often thinner, and it doesn’t always need to be removed.
Why do I get strawberry legs while others don’t?
This isn’t due to shaving incorrectly or doing something wrong. The main reason is individual differences in hair color and thickness. The thicker and darker the hair, the more likely it is that the remaining hairs under the skin will be noticeable.
“If someone has just a few light hairs, stubble won’t be visible after shaving.” As mentioned, strawberry legs appear specifically after shaving because some stubble remains under the skin.
What can be done to avoid the strawberry leg effect? 5 tips
Of course, you might say: if men don’t worry about their “strawberry chin,” I shouldn’t be concerned about “strawberry legs” either. That’s absolutely fine! But if this bothers you, here are 5 tips that may help:
-
Shave against the grain: “Shaving hair against the direction of their growth can minimally help, as the hair is cut even shorter, making the stubble less noticeable,” says Dr. Goluke. However, shaving against the direction of hair growth can severely irritate the skin, which may not be worth it for minimal effect.
-
Root hair removal: Due to possible skin irritation, the dermatologist recommends methods where hair is pulled out from the root. “After waxing, sugaring, or epilation, the strawberry effect doesn’t occur because the hair is completely removed and grows back slowly and thinly.” For example, you can try sugar paste.
-
Laser hair removal: Laser and IPL are also options, although they are expensive. Laser treatments can only be done by professionals, while IPL can be done at home.
-
Self-tanner and body makeup: Self-tanner and body makeup can help minimize the contrast between the skin and dark stubble, making the spots less noticeable.
-
Moisturizing and exfoliating: Regularly apply lotion and exfoliate the skin to keep your legs smooth and well-groomed. Shaving can irritate the skin, leading to small white-red bumps around the hair follicles (keratosis pilaris), making the skin resemble strawberry skin.
